Greed – Graham’s Sin.

June 4, 2007 at 6:58 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

Basically my starting point for the Character was researching the word ‘Greed’. Also through a conversation with Mike the character’s name was created ‘ Graham Reed’ G.REED. (good one Mike).

Greed is selfish excessive or uncontrolled desire for possession or pursuit of money, wealth, food, or other possessions, especially when this denies the same goods to others. It is generally considered a vice, and is one of the seven deadly sins in Catholicism. (People who do not view unconstrained acquisitiveness as a vice will generally use a word other than greed, which has strong negative connotations.)
Some desire to increase one’s wealth is nearly universal and acceptable in any culture, but this simple want is not considered greed. Greed is the extreme form of this desire, especially where one desires things simply for the sake of owning them. Greed may entail acquiring material possessions at the expense of another person’s welfare (for example, a father buying himself a new car rather than fix the roof of his family’s home) or otherwise reflect flawed priorities.
Coveting another person’s goods is usually called envy or jealousy, and may be a kind of greed. Greed for food or drink, combined with excessive indulgence in them, is called gluttony. Excessive greed for and indulgence in sex is called lust, although this term no longer carries as negative connotations as it once did.
Greed is sometimes represented by the frog.
A woodcut by Ugo da Carpi, is entitled “Hercules Chasing Avarice from the Temple of the Muses.” [1]. Thomas Aquinas metaphorically described the sin of Avarice as “Mammon being carried up from Hell by a wolf, coming to inflame the human heart with Greed”.
Proponents of laissez-faire capitalism sometimes argue that greed should not be considered a negative trait and should instead be embraced, as they claim that greed is a profoundly benevolent force in human affairs, as well as a necessary foundation for the capitalist system. Critics have argued this definition confuses greed with self-interest, which can be benign.

An excessive desire or longing to have more than needed or deserved; greediness.

Synonyms
avarice
covetousness
rapacity

Derived terms
greedily
greediness

Noun

An inordinate desire for some supposed good.
One of the seven deadly sins.

Etymology
From Old French, from Latin avaritia, from avarus (greedy), from avere (to desire).

Quotations
excessive desire of gain from wealth

1606 – Shakespeare, Macbeth iv 3
With this there grows,
In my most ill-compos’d affection, such
A stanchless avarice, that, were I king,
I should cut off the nobles for their lands.
1726 – Jonathan Swift, Gulliver’s Travels Part II, ch. vi
Whether they were always so free from avarice, partialities, or want, that a bribe, or some other sinister view, could have no place among them?
1776 – Thomas Paine, Common Sense
Oppression is often the consequence, but seldom or never the means of riches; and though avarice will preserve a man from being necessitously poor, it generally makes him too timorous to be wealthy.
2006 – Luxord, Kingdom Hearts 2 Episode II of Port Royal (“Pirates of the Caribbean world”)
The Darkness of men’s hearts, drawn to these cursed medallions; and this Heartless, a veritable maelstrom of avarice. I wonder, are they worthy to serve Organization XIII?

Development of Graham’s character and the story/events so far.

June 4, 2007 at 6:44 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

I have now fully developed Grahams character and persona. On his MySpace are pictures of Maserati show images etc and he has a full description of who he is. Also I’ve changed his image to a maserati symbol as the Face will be used for the Police identity kit. The story and events are unfolding and it is good fun and interesting to see how it all turns out. I think it is very fluid but also there is some script/structure which as help us all to communicate and stay on track – making it all work together. The group meetings have been successful in this and we have all given each other tasks and roles within the team. it’s going well, here it is so far generated by the team:

Group decisions:
The final piece will be an installation (included at the installation are Jonathan’s artifacts police recovered that he left in his bag on a flight at JFK airport he didn’t board at the last minute. Jonathan’s phone, evidence bags, print outs of emails, webpages etc, underlined and highlighted by police, pictures, maps etc, pinned on wall.)

There will be recorded police audio interviews with the characters.

Tasks /The key events

Comments and exhanges between characters that already know each other. (see previous blog entry)

Saturday
Do not blog or write comments, etc on Saturday evening!
Party
Invited by Jonathan, left to Susan to arrange.
Venue: Exlusive club in London (yet to be decided).
When: Saturday 26th 9pm – 3pm

Party plan: key events
(character’s flaws/sins come out in other character’s discussions about events after the party)
Susan and Irena arrive early, keenly awaiting jonathan’s return.
Tim is waiting for Graham to finish getting ready, Graham is giving Tim a lift. Arrive 10pm.
Paul is there already, seems to know a few people, works out who Susan is but hangs back.
A.C. arrives really late, can’t get a cab until 11pm as couldn’t be bothered to roder one.
Justine arrives just after 10pm, comes with her mates, all party girls.

Susan gets more and more stressed as the evening progresses, keeps everyone plied with drinks, makes an excuse @12.30pm that he is back but jet-lagged and can’t make it, more drinks all round. Has spent alot of the evening going outside to ring him on his mobile, with no luck.
Irena is angry that Jonathan hasn’t turned up (as usual), letting her sister down. She ends up having a row with Susan because she realizes Susan is lying about Jonathan’s non-appearance, and causing a scene at the party. Graham comes over and tries to sort it out, and both sisters get angry with him and Irena throws her drink at him. Tim is gleeful, and comes over to comfort them both. Graham heads for the buffet and comforts himself with much eating.
Paul eventually introduces himself to Susan, he needs to pass on the goods to Jonathan and get paid for it so that he can then pay his supplier…
Justine gets bored waiting for Jonathan, flirts with all the men in a very obvious way, noticed by Susan and Irena, and ends up having a drunken snog with Paul.
A.C. helps himself to the buffet and drinks as many free glasses as possible, whilst mingling with the group and looking for the next person to sponge off (and a taxi home), particularly annoying Graham and Tim, with a view to future sponging.

Sunday
Susan receives email from Jonathan to say sory he can’t come back..

Tuesday
By Tuesday evening all characters find out that Jonathan is missing.

Wednesday
Police contact Susan, she gives details of other people who were at party to police.

Thursday
Police bring all characters in for questioning

Friday
Last of comments and blogging, etc. Graham and Paul held for further questioning.

Start arranging extra content.

Email communication involving Graham.

cheers Adrian , I just sent Graham an email as Tim Dingman. Suggest you ask about my motor – > I tell you it’s a Reanult Clio -> you make some smug remarks about that, plug your maserati and utter a few silly remarks about what a run down place Salford is etc. Despite all that you’ll take me up on the offer and we’ll arrange a meeting point.

Hi Tim, Its Graham (Jonathans friend), please respond to my earlier email. I could do with a lift buddy, just hope you’ve got a decent car for the journey.
I always like to travel in style. Anyway I’m popping out for a few beers now, will be back later or tomorrow evening after a bit of property buisness in Salford (bloody awful place).
Anyway, get back to me, so we can arrange a time and meeting place, cheers Graham.

Hi Irena, no sorry I have not seen or heard from Jonathan. I’m not sure what his commitments are this week, I guess he was’nt too busy as he arranged a party etc.
Its all bit weird and worrying really, but I’m sure he’s okay. If I hear anything I will let you know. Do not worry about the suit, I’ve already invested in a new one, things happen.
Move on I say, I was just sad to see a good wine go to waste! Graham.

My character ‘Graham’

May 20, 2007 at 7:28 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a comment

My character representing ‘greed’ is Graham Reed and I have set up a persona for him on ‘MySpace’ and given him an email address etc so I can communicate this week with Tim (Clive), Irena (Penny) and Susan (Mike), not forgetting Jonathan (?). This communication is before the party to get things rolling.

picture-1.png

Graham’s contact details:

http://www.myspace.com/grahamaserati

grawantsthelot1@hotmail.co.uk

The project is going okay, we all have characters and personas set up and a basic understanding of the script/plan and what is happening. I personally think we now have to decide and agree actions on: what happens at the party, any info surrounding Jonathan. I think then we can start communicating and letting the monster develop, making sure we keep everything as evidence (printouts/screen grabs etc). I think this can be fluid and natural as in real life, so there does not have to be a strict script etc, let it flow and catch the evidence.

We are working okay as a team, but I think we could communicate a little more and its very important we agree actions.

We have now had 3 good and important meetings to date where we have agreed a lot really and Mike and Roger have produced some good visual plans. Thanks Tom for the ‘Flash Face’ idea which is great.

We have had two lectures with Martin regarding working in a team which were very useful and showed a basic structure to working as a group and also Multi-Media practice. I found this very helpful especially the different roles involved and the points on successful teams/group working. I think more and more now collaboration is so important so that you can utilise different people’s specilaist skills and knowledge. I’m very much interested in the emergence of the D-School at Stanford University in the USA and their ideas on collaboration in Design Education. I’m trying to pick up on and utilise some of the theory and useful ways of working in my own practice as a Designer and Educator.

7 Deadly Sins Group Project

February 20, 2007 at 7:05 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 1 Comment

This is my Blog related to The Imagined Worlds Group Project ’7 Deadly Sins’ ‘Wheres Jonathan’.
On here I will evaluate my progress and the progress of the Group Project.

I have now created a MySpace profile for my character ‘Graham’ based on the sin of ‘Greed’ giving him a detailed persona. I have also used ‘FlashFace’ to create a visual face profile. With a little more tweaking it will be complete soon. As a group we have had several meetings where we have agreed actions and progress for each week, it is going ok. We now have to decide what happens in the script/plan and then let the communication and events grow and develop, while we all copy and keep evidence of all communication, which will eventually be printed out to form a complete outcome.
